Pokémon GO Fest 2020 may be just beginning here in the United States, but it’s over and done with for large swaths of the rest of the world. Such is the weird part about playing a global game that still runs on local time: places like New Zealand and Australia get to it first. But that actually comes in handy, sometimes: other people can demo things earlier and give us some tips.
The one that I’m particularly interested in today regards Friendship hour, one of 5 rotating habitats that define Pokémon GO Fest 2020. Friendship hour can yield one of the game’s most coveted items in the game: rare candies, which can become candy for any Pokémon.
This and some other tips comes to us from reddit user official_kerubin.
First off, you don’t want to send or open gifts during any hour besides Friendship hour, because that just doesn’t do anyone any good.
Secondly, you want to take advantage of how the event is structured. During each hour, there will be a global challenge that trainers can complete to unlock a bonus. Once the bonus is unlocked, it will be available for the rest of that hour.
We will unlock the bonus for sending gifts, so do that as soon as the hour starts. Don’t open any, though! You want to wait for the bonus to activate before doing that.
A gift’s contents are apparently determined at the time of opening, so you can only get rare candy once the hourly bonus has been activated.
So, in short: send your gifts at the beginning of the hour, but don’t open them. Once the bonus is unlocked, go nuts opening gifts. Stop again when the hour is done, and then repeat for the next friendship hour.
So, if you do that, you should be able to get some rare candies from opening gifts. If you make sure to send and open at the right times, you’ll maximize your chances of coming away with a decent haul. Note, too, that this will only be live for ticket holders.
